For most welding jobs, the interview isn’t really the interview — the weld test is.
A welder resume and a conversation can get you in the door, but a practical test is where the job actually gets decided.
Knowing what’s coming ahead of time is most of the battle.
Welding certifications and past job titles tell an employer what you’re supposed to be able to do.
A practical test tells them what you can actually do, today, on their machines, to their procedure.
It also protects both sides: a candidate who passes a real test walks into the job with confidence they can do the work, and an employer who skips testing is the one most likely to end up with a costly mis-hire.
If you’re applying through a recruiter, expect the test to happen either at the employer’s shop or at a certified testing facility, generally after an initial phone or in-person interview and before an offer is finalized.
You’ll be given a welding procedure specification, commonly called a WPS.
This document specifies the exact process, filler metal, amperage range, position, and joint design you’re expected to follow.
Read it carefully before you strike an arc.
Deviating from the WPS, even with a technically clean-looking weld, can cause you to fail the test because you’re being evaluated on your ability to perform the required procedure — not simply produce a weld that looks good.
You’ll weld a test coupon, typically plate or pipe, in the position or positions relevant to the job:
1G: Flat
2G: Horizontal
3G: Vertical
4G: Overhead
6G: Combined pipe position used for demanding pipe applications
The coupon is usually an unfamiliar material on an unfamiliar machine, set up by someone else.
Part of what’s being tested is your ability to adapt quickly, not just your technique in isolation.
The coupon gets evaluated either visually, by bend test, or by X-ray/radiographic testing, depending on the code and the employer’s standard.
Visual inspection checks for issues such as uniformity, undercut, overlap, and porosity.
Bend testing physically checks for defects such as cracks and lack of fusion by bending the welded coupon around a die.
Radiographic or X-ray testing can identify internal defects that aren’t visible from the surface, such as porosity or incomplete penetration, and may be used for pipeline, pressure vessel, and other code-related work.
Practice with unfamiliar procedure specifications, not just the settings you already know by muscle memory.
Being handed a WPS you’ve never seen and executing it correctly under time pressure is a skill in itself.
Read the entire procedure before beginning.
Pay particular attention to:
Welding process
Base material
Filler metal
Electrode
Position
Joint design
Root opening
Electrical parameters
Other required procedure details
Test facilities and employer shops don’t always run the same brand or model you’re used to.
If you can get even 15–20 minutes on a different machine beforehand, do it.
A candidate can know a process extremely well and still need a few minutes to adjust to the controls and arc characteristics of unfamiliar equipment.
Don’t spend all your preparation time practicing the position you’re already most comfortable welding.
If the posting requires 3G and 4G, make sure you’re ready to perform both.
Testers may use the position most relevant to the actual work or the one that best demonstrates whether a candidate can perform the required job.
Fit-up, tack welds, and machine settings can determine the outcome of the test before the actual welding even begins.
Double-check the requirements of the WPS before committing to the weld.
Pay close attention to:
Root gap
Bevel angle
Alignment
Tack welds
Machine settings
Amperage
Joint preparation
Treat setup with the same level of care you give the weld itself.
If anything on the WPS or coupon setup is unclear, ask the tester before striking an arc.
A clarifying question before beginning demonstrates that you’re paying attention to the procedure.
Guessing and discovering afterward that you misunderstood the requirements can cost you the test.
A failed test on one code, position, or process doesn’t mean you’re not a qualified welder.
It usually points to a specific issue: an unfamiliar machine, a position you don’t get regular practice in, nerves under a time limit, setup, or a specific weld defect.
If possible, ask what caused the failure.
The feedback may identify something specific such as:
Undercut
Lack of fusion
Porosity
Incomplete penetration
Setup problems
Procedure deviation
That information tells you exactly what to practice before your next test.
Treat a failed test as diagnostic information, not a verdict on your entire welding career.
The weld test exists to protect the quality of the employer’s work and to protect you from ending up in a role you’re not actually set up to succeed in.
Walk in knowing your process, read the WPS carefully, and treat setup with the same care as the weld itself.
Preparation removes much of the uncertainty from the test.
